Susanna Young Specht
sister of Nicholas Young

BIOGRAPHY

Susanna Young was born Anne Suzanne Jung on Sept 10, 1837 in Rohrbach-les-bitche, Moselle, Alsace-Lorraine, France to Jean Jung and Jeanne Eb/Epp. According to census records, Susanna came to the United States in 1850.

Susanna's New Orleans civil marriage license was dated 23 Feb. 1859 (see license page 1, page 2). She and George Peter Specht most likely married in New Orleans shortly after obtaining the license. A request has been placed at the New Orleans Archdiocesan Archives to see if they married in the Catholic church. At the time of this writing, that record had not yet arrived.

Susanna and George Peter Specht raised their family in New Orleans. According to the 1900 federal census, Susanna was the mother of 16 children, only 2 of whom were living in 1900. A few of the Specht children who died in infancy or childhood have been documented (see family group sheet). Several other Specht children's New Orleans death records are not detailed enough for me to know if they are in fact Susanna's. Therefore, requesting Catholic sacramental records from the New Orleans Archdiocesan Archives will be necessary to document all of Susanna's children.

Frederica Louisa (Lulu) Specht and Mamie Specht Guenther were the two surviving children of George Peter and Susanna Young Specht. Lulu never married and ended up in an insane asylum. Mamie Specht Guenther married a bit later in life (see marriage record). Mamie's husband's obituary did not name any children. Therefore, it is likely that Susanna and George Peter Specht, after having 16 of their own children, did not have any grandchildren.

Susanna, Lulu, and Mamie are referred to or mentioned in several family letters.

  1. Nicholas Young's Aug. 18, 1908 letter (page 1, page 2, more context)

  2. Nicholas Young's Dec. 27, 1903 letter (page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4, more context)

  3. Mae Young's March 11, 1937 letter (page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4, more context).

George Peter Specht died Feb. 10, 1902 in New Orleans (see death certificate, obituary). One priceless clue was included in his obituary: "Eagle Point, Jackson county, Ore. papers please copy." Eagle Point was where two of Susanna's brothers lived (see Nicholas Augustus Young and John Nicholas Young).

Susanna Young Specht died 25 Jan 1907 in New Orleans (see death certificate, obituary). Her obituary provided two clues: "California and St. Louis papers please copy." The reference to California refers to her sister Anna Young Reinholtz's family living in Live Oak, Sutter County, California. The reference to St. Louis most likely refers to Nicholas Young and his family who were living in Osage County, Missouri.
