Anna Young Reinholtz
sister of Nicholas Young
CONNECTION
Anna Young Reinholtz was born Anne Jung on Dec 12, 1832 in Rohrbach-les-bitche, Moselle, Alsace-Lorraine, France. Since she did not have a French death record, we assumed that she had immigrated to the U.S. with the rest of the family. But, we didn't know specifically where in the U.S. she had gone, whom she had married, or how we would ever document her family.
We knew from Estella Young Carwile's 1964 letter to my grandfather that Estella's father, Nicholas Young, had siblings Nicholas, John and Annie who went to California (see Estella's letter page 1, page 2, page 3). John Nicholas Young and Nicholas Augustus Young (of Eagle Point, Oregon) have been accounted for.
At first we did not know if Anna had stayed in California or if she had moved elsewhere, but Nicholas Young's June 20, 1902 letter provided a clue (see letter page 1, page 2, page 3). It reads, "I have not got any letters lately from New Orleans nor Oregon and did not get an answer from California." Another reference to California was mentioned in Nicholas Young's brother-in-law George Peter Specht's New Orleans obituary. This was the third time a reference to California was made, but we didn't know WHERE in California.
Finally we got a break! The location of Live Oak, California was mentioned in Margaret Schantz Young's 1928 New Orleans obituary. Margaret Schantz was the wife of Nicholas Young's brother Peter August Young. This location provided enough to go on!
Finding the correct Anna in U.S. records and then making the connection to our Young family has been an adventure! In fact, the connection was made just days before this writing. Therefore, the documents that have been gathered so far have not yet been scanned, and the documents that have been ordered have not yet arrived. I will provide a sketch of the records until complete documentation can be added to this site.
Please contact me if you can provide additional information about this family.
SKETCH
- Anna Young and Charles Reinholtz had son Albert in CA in 1858, specific place and date unknown at this time.
- Anna and Charles got three land patents in Sutter County, CA between 1864-1870. One is a homestead and the other two are cash-sales patents.
- Daughter Emma was born in 1868 in CA, specific date and location unknown at this time.
- I don't know if other kids were born and had died in that 10 year span between Albert and Emma's births.
- Anna's husband Charles died in May 1868, probably in Sutter or Yuba Counties, California.
- Anna was either widowed while pregnant with Emma or fairly soon after her birth.
- The family name Reinholtz is also spelled Reynolds in some records.
- Anna is living in Sutter County, CA with her two children and without her husband in 1870. Her birthplace is listed as France.
- Anna is living in Sutter County, CA in 1880, but this time she is not with her children. Her children are living in the same town. Albert, in his early 20s, is living with his 12-yr old sister Emma. Anna's birthplace is listed as Germany.
- Daughter Emma married/divorced twice in Sutter, CA, both times to John Ernest Briick/Bruck. She has a child each time she was married to him.
- Emma filed for divorce #2 in 1892 in Sutter Co., CA.
- Emma, Albert, and Anna moved to Jackson County, Oregon. This is the residence of Anna's brother Nicholas Augustus Young and John Nicholas Young. I don't know if Anna, Emma, and Albert all went to Oregon at the same time or if they went separately.
- Emma married husband #3, Laverne Freeman, in Jackson County, Oregon in 1894. The wedding was held at the home of Mrs. Annie Young (this is presumably John Young's wife, Anna Byrne Young).
- Anna Reinholtz died in Jackson County, Oregon on Sept. 12, 1896.
- Anna's estate was recorded in Jackson County records. Her children Emma and Albert are named as heirs. Her new son-in-law, L.L. Freeman, is named as administrator.
- A Sutter County California newspaper ran an article about Anna's death in Oregon and indicates that she'd be buried in Live Oak.
- In Oregon, Nicholas' Young's neighbor, James Fryer, recorded in his personal journal that he went to the funeral of N. Young's sister (Sept. 13, 1896). He also indicated that her body would be sent to Marysville, CA (Marysville is near Live Oak). The original journal is held by the family. A copy of this journal is at the Eagle Point Historical Society. I also have a copy of it.
- After Anna's death, Emma, her husband Laverne, and brother Albert went back to CA by the 1900 census.
- Both Albert and Emma are buried in Live Oak Cemetery. I don't think Albert married.
- Later in 1915, Emma's husband Laverne divorced her.
- One of Emma's children, Anna Briick/Bruck Foster, is buried in Live Oak Cemetery. It appears that Emma's sons-in-law (Brenton Foster and Thomas McCrea also also buried there). I do not know where Emma's daughter Lillian is buried.
- Albert Reynolds died in 1923, and Emma Freeman in 1939.
- The synopsis of the newspaper article on Anna's death indicated that she had died in Oregon but that she was buried in Live Oak. I can't find her in a cemetery there. I can't find Charles in a cemetery in Live Oak either.
- I don't know where Anna and Charles married. I can't find a marriage record for them in Sutter, Yuba, or Nevada counties. But, they probably married before 1858 (Albert's birth yr). I have thought about looking in San Francisco since I know that her brother Nicholas Augustus Young had been there in 1850.
