Letters written by Mahala Carter Young

Mahala Carter Young wrote letters to her daughter Estella Young Carwile. It is not known what years Mahala's letters were written, but there are a few clues.

Estella and her husband Walter were married in Osage County, Missouri in 1905. In 1910, they were living in Jefferson township, Osage County, the same locale as Estella's parents. However, by 1920, Estella and Walter had moved to Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri. Nicholas died in 1925, followed by Mahala in 1938.

Although it can't be known for sure if the letters were written after Estella and Walter moved, it does seem likely. In one letter (dated the 22nd), Mahala indicates how lonely she has been, how her health is failing, and how she fears that she won't live long. Additionally, she does not mention Nicholas, which suggests the letter was written after his death, between 1925-1938.

It may be helpful for the reader to know that "Dare wones" means "Dear ones."
